Here goes:
CLUE: Form follows function…
ANSWER: Kate @functionofplanning
Kate and planning go way back. In fact, she can hardly remember when she didn't have a planner glued to her side. Even during her school years, Kate always used student agendas to track her assignments. She also started with her first Day Runner as a freshman in high school. As her love of analog planning grew, so did her interest in finding new styles of planning, planning products and inspiration online.
In 2022, Kate created her dedicated instagram account to planning in order to connect and share ideas with others. But it wasn’t until two years later when she really became consistent with posting and participating in the planner community. As a professional scientist and planner with ADHD, her style has leaned more toward the minimal side allowing her to better focus on the tasks at hand. Functional planning has become the way to silence the chaos and overstimulation all around her. She believes form follows function and if your planner doesn't work for your needs then it's pointless. She has found her sweet spot in putting the fun in functional and prefers to have separate systems or books, ie. a planner for plans, a journal for thoughts/intentions and a junk journal for creativity.
Although these days, she is a self-confessed “planner hopper,” she has made peace with it and embraced various planners and layouts throughout her journey. Kate likes to have several options on hand in order to decide “what system will meet her needs and bring her joy.” But it all starts with good paper…which is very important when using fountain pens, one of Kate’s favorite planning essentials. Quality paper can hold fountain pen ink and elevate the overall writing experience. Currently, she is using a personal ring agenda as an everyday carry for personal/home, a HP mini/bujo combination for work, A5 rings planner which she keeps at home for long term planning plus a pocket plus TN for on the go needs. Some of the other planning essentials Kate enjoys using are post-it notes and page flags which play an integral part in her pre-planning.
Since joining the planner community, Kate has grown her Instagram community, as well as launched a blog and YouTube channel. Plus in this past month, she opened the doors to a new private community, the F|P Planning Circle, an exciting new chapter in her journey.
